Student Accountability Policy for WSMS
We at West Side Middle School feel one of our objectives is to have all of our students demonstrate academic competencies at each grade level prior to moving to the next grade level by passing the Indiana standardized ISTEP+ exam. The following guidelines have been established to help ensure that all students meet the requirements for graduation as established by the Indiana Department of Education.
All West Side Middle School students who meet the following criteria will be promoted to the next grade level. Students who do not meet the following criteria must schedule a meeting with the West Side Middle School Student Accountability Transition Team in order to be considered for promotion to the next grade level.
GROUP I CRITERIA (MUST MEET TWO OF THESE THREE)
A. Students must pass the Math and Language Arts sections of the ISTEP+ exam.
In the 2008-2009 school year the State of Indiana will give the ISTEP+ in the fall and again in spring. In order to meet criteria A, the student must pass both the Math and Language Arts sections of the ISTEP+ exam in either the fall or the spring. This will be the only year the test will be given twice because of the state's decision to move the test from the fall to the spring
C. Tutoring is available to all West Side students. General tutoring is available four afternoons per week or specific subject help is available as scheduled by individual teachers. Students who are not meeting A or B from this Criteria Group will be assigned to tutoring and must attend as assigned.
GROUP II CRITERIA (MUST MEET ONE OF THESE TWO)
A. Students must not have more than three separate office incidents during the year that result in an in-school or out-of-school suspension.
B. Students must have a 96% attendance rate for the school year. (That means that out of 180 days in the entire year, the student must not be absent more than 8 days.)
West Side sports schedules are subject to changes due to unforeseen circumstances, such as weather delays, etc. Check the current schedules at the "Athletics" link on the left side menu column.
